NAVEL/NIPPLE PIERCING AFTERCARE
Navel & Nipple piercings take between 4-9 months to fully heal, however navels tend to heal quicker with curved barbell jewelry. It is very important to properly clean a piercing. You will begin the healing process immediately. Removing discharge, dead skin cells, dirt and bacteria picked up throughout the day is imperative. Cleaning procedures are simple but must be followed twice a day in order to heal within the 4 to 9 month time frame. Your piercing will begin to secure a whitish fluid. This is not aninfection, it is part of the healing process.
Twice a day in the shower, allow warm water to rinse off the pierced area until the crusted material is softened. Using anti-bacterial soap (see brand names below) gently work the crusted matter off the jewelry with your fingers. Rinse thoroughly. Resoap and gently move the jewelry up and down slightly. Allow the soap to remain in and around the piercing for about one minute. Rinse the piercing again and
move your jewelry up and down slightly to remove any remaining soap from the inside of the piercing. It is very important to remove the anti bacterial soap from the piercing to avoid irritation and itching.
Warm salt water soaks can help accelerate the healing process. Saltwater soaks draw out discharge, prevent infection and accelerate healing. To soak, add 1/4 teaspoon of non iodized sea salt (not table salt) to 1 cup of warm water. Stir and invert the cup over the piercing forming a vacuum. Hold it there for 3 to 5 minutes or until water cools Repeat this process 2 to 3 times a day. You may want to sleep
with a clean shirt or sports bra for the first few nights to minimize jewelry movement for your nipple piercing.
The following steps can be taken to assist the healing process. Zinc or vitamin C supplements are suggested to help speed the healing process and regeneration of tissue. Vitamin C supplements should be taken in doses of 100mg, zinc in 60mg doses. It is recommended to eat before taking zinc to avoid an upset stomach.
Please avoid the following:
Never touch your piercing with unwashed hands; this is crucial in order to ensure proper healing. The only time a piercing should be touched is when being cleaned in the shower. Avoid contact with oils, powders, creams, perfumes and suntan lotion. Avoid contact with other bodily fluids, even if you are in a monogamous relationship. Your partner has different natural bacteria than you and an infection can occur. Do not go into pools, hot tubs, lakes or oceans for at least 4 weeks.
Avoid wearing belts, tight pants, stockings or any other restrictive clothing that will press against your navel.
