ORAL PIERCING AFTERCARE
Estimated healing time for oral piercing is 4 to 8 weeks. It is vital to follow all healing procedures to ensure proper healing. Rinse with antiseptic mouthwash after everything you eat, drink or smoke for the entire healing period. The purpose of cleaning a piercing is to promote proper healing It is vital to remove any dead skin cells and discharge secreted by your body as well as external dirt and bacteria picked up during the day.
Thoroughly wash your hands with an anti bacterial soap before cleaning the piercing. Using a fresh Q-tip saturated in the cleaning solution (for brand names see below), gently remove any crusted matter from the openings of the piercing (this does not apply to tongue piercings).
Warm salt water soaks can help accelerate the healing process. Salt water soaks draw out discharge, prevent infection and accelerate healing. To soak, add 1/4 teaspoon of non iodized sea salt (not table salt) to 1 cup of warm water. Stir and invert the cup over the piercing forming a vacuum. Hold it there for 3 to 5 minutes or until water cools. Repeat this process 2 to 3 times a day.
The following steps can be taken to assist the healing process. Zinc or vitamin C supplements are suggested to help speed the healing process and regeneration of tissue. Vitamin C supplements should be taken in doses of 100mg, zinc in 60mg doses. It is recommended to eat before taking zinc to avoid an upset stomach.
Also, suck on small ice cubes to reduce swelling(we also like 7-11 Slurpees). Take Advil (anti inflammatory) to help control the swelling, not Aspirin.
Please avoid the following:
Never touch your piercing with unwashed hands; this is crucial in order to ensure proper healing. The only time a piercing should be touched is when being cleaned in the shower. Avoid contact with oils, powders, creams, perfumes and suntan lotion. Avoid contact with other bodily fluids, even if you are in a monogamous relationship. Your partner has different natural bacteria than you and an infection can occur. Do not go into pools, hot tubs, lakes or oceans for at least 4 weeks. It is important to reduce or stop smoking, as smokers may experience a considerably longer healing period. Do not move the jewelry unnecessarily during the healing period.
