What to Expect at a Tattoo Consultation: A First-Timer’s Guide

So you’ve got an idea for a tattoo—maybe it’s a personal symbol, a full sleeve concept, or something that just feels right. Before the needle hits the skin, there’s one important step: the consultation.
At My Tattoo, consultations are where great tattoos begin. Whether you’re planning a large custom piece or just want to make sure your ideas align with the artist’s approach, here’s what you can expect
💬 What Is a Tattoo Consultation?
A consultation is a short, face-to-face (or sometimes virtual) meeting with your artist to talk about your design, placement, style, size, and expectations. It’s not the tattoo session—it’s the planning before the art begins.
This step is especially important for custom work or large pieces like backpieces, sleeves, or multi-session projects. It helps both the artist and client stay on the same page and sets the tone for the entire experience.

📁 What to Bring to Your Consultation
You don’t need to bring a fully drawn concept, but here’s what helps:
  • 📸 Reference images — You’re welcome to bring examples to help explain your ideas. But please don’t expect the artist to copy anything exactly. Our artists use references as a jumping-off point to create something original that reflects their own style and your story.
  • 📍 Placement idea — Know where on your body you’re thinking about, and whether you’re planning to add more later
  • 📐 Size range — Do you want something palm-sized? Half sleeve? Full back?
  • 💵 Budget awareness — Be ready to talk pricing; we’ll always aim to make something that works for you
  • 🗓️ Your availability — Especially if you’re traveling or want to plan around healing time

🎨 What the Artist Will Discuss
During the consult, your artist might ask questions like:
  • “Do you want this in color or black and gray?”
  • “Is there a story or personal meaning behind this piece?”
  • “Is this your first tattoo?”
  • “Do you want to do this in one long session, or split it up?”
They may also give advice on how the tattoo will flow with your body, what size works best, or which design elements will stand the test of time.

✏️ When Will You See the Design?
This can vary depending on the artist. Some may share the design a few days after your consultation, others a few days before your appointment—and sometimes, especially for larger custom projects or returning clients, you may not see it until the day of the session.
Every artist works differently, and part of the trust you place in them includes giving them the creative space to bring your idea to life in their own way.

💡 Be Open to Artist Input
Please trust your artist—they know what they’re doing. Every suggestion they make is intended to help your tattoo last longer, flow better with your body, or simply look its best. You’re hiring them not just for their technical skill, but for their experience, their judgment, and their style.

✅ After the Consultation
Once you’re ready, we’ll:
  • Lock in your appointment date(s)
  • Go over your deposit
  • Answer any last questions about prep or aftercare
If you're still deciding, that’s okay too—just reach out when you're ready.

Your tattoo consultation is the foundation of a great tattoo. Bring your ideas, your questions, and an open mind. At My Tattoo, we’re here to help bring your vision to life—whether it’s your first tattoo or your fiftieth.
